Do you want to be done with public school? You arent the only one. Some parents have made the choice that homeschooling is a better solution than a traditional school. If you have thought about homeschooling, there are many things to consider first. Continue reading to learn all you need to know about homeschooling your children.
Sit down as a family each Sunday and discuss the upcoming week. This allows everyone to know what is expected of them during the week and how each person can help make the week more successful. Planning also gives everyone the opportunity to take part in field trips and projects.
Dont neglect using art when creating a lesson plan, even when art isnt the thing that is being taught. Your children could draw illustrations for their lessons or use a different medium to put together a model or a map. You can even incorporate singing, acting, or sculpting. This will help them immerse into a topic and develop an interest into what you are teaching them while developing their creativity and their motor skills.
If you must focus on two things, in particular, focus on reading and math. These subjects can be difficult for some children to learn. They are also going to be the most-used subjects throughout their lives. A solid mathematics and reading foundation will help them throughout the rest of their schooling and lives.
Dont try to do things exactly as a school would. One of the benefits of homeschooling is the flexibility; do what works for your child. If he or she is more comfortable sitting on the floor and working, forgo the desk. If math is of particular interest, spend a little more time nurturing that subject. Cater to your child while working through the curriculum.
If you eventually plan to transfer your children back into a regular school program, then make sure that your homeschooling program prepares them for that. See if you can get a copy of the school curriculum for the year they will re-enter the system to ensure that they will be on track with or ahead of their class. Furthermore, have them study on the traditional school schedule, lunches and all.
You should not consider yourself to be your childs teacher. You are more the facilitator to their education. You are there to help them, not lecture them for hours on end. Allow them to do their studies on their own and help them with any questions that they may have. You could very well learn as much as your child does if you take the time to learn with them instead of lecturing them.
Exercise
Do not expect homeschooling to work seamlessly right from the start. It can take up to a year before you settle into a good flow with homeschooling. Even though you have educated yourself about the process before beginning, the skill to make it all work smoothly takes some time to develop. Exercise patience and you will be more successful.
Public schools have recess for a reason. Your homeschooling curriculum should include it, as well. That way, they will not get restless and unfocused during lesson time. Come up with a break schedule that allows your child to unwind between lessons.
Nutrition
Before starting a lesson, feed your child well with a nutritious meal or hearty snack. This will give your children the energy they require for a long learning session. They wont get sleepy or lose any of your attention when youre teaching.
Again, many parents dont think their children can get the best possible education at public schools. This happens to be one of the major reasons people decide to take up home schooling. Learn more about homeschooling from these tips and make a choice as to whether you want to teach your kids this way.
